DESIGNS FOR ECOHOMES

Flexible House

This prototype design focuses on the key challenges for housing in the twenty-first century, namely, flexibility, density and sustainability.

Flexible House has been designed for adaptability through its life to accommodate the evolution of the family unit. The house can be easily divided into two parts to provide a semi-autonomous or fully autonomous dwelling for an elderly relative, a flat that can be rented out, a workspace or a garage.

Internally a generous double-height south-facing central space is provided with large glazed openings onto the garden. Good quality natural light and natural timber finishes increase occupants’ feeling of wellbeing.

The garden is sited to the side of the house rather than the rear of the plot to make efficient use of land without compromising quality of amenity or privacy. All houses are oriented to the sun so that natural light is maximized and adjacent neighbours do not overlook each other.

The design is highly sustainable and incorporates such features as passive whole-house ventilation, a high level of insulation and air-tightness and rainwater collection.
