DESIGNS FOR ECOHOMES

Elizabethan 11 House

The inspiration for this design comes straight from Elizabethan architecture, which boasts such familiar and appealing characteristics as timber frame and the jetty. In this design, the outward jetty is moved towards the front to protect the entrance area and parking space from the rain and provide a terraced area at the back. The black timber battens and white infill render of Elizabethan buildings is re-interpreted in this modern design as a steel frame with various infill materials.

The house’s layout is highly adaptable because there are no radiators. A revolving shelf wall at first level allows the floor plan to be redefined as necessary. This level can serve as a venue for community events as it is completely open from front to back.

A 1.2 metre high crawl space at intermediate level provides a central space for all services including heating and cooling, and accommodates storage space. Above this, the living space is secure and reasonably quiet.
