The traditional bungalow stripped of its bays and dormers, and reinvented in sustainable, streamlined form. A steeply sloped roof creates a single-height open plan living space at the front, rising above the bedroom accommodation to the double-height rear section. Compact and versatile, the “bungalow” can be easily adapted to its location.
The architectural form is a cube top-sliced at an angle to create a mono-pitched roof, with further slices removed to create an overhanging entrance porch, a shaded patio area and a sun terrace. Built using a timber or metal frame, the construction allows the houses to be individually configured to suit sloping sites, the path of the sun and shading. The houses can also be clad in a stone, timber or render, to suit local preferences and markets. Its relatively compact design – with a smaller ground area per house than most of the other entries – lowers the demand for heating and the carbon footprint of the materials themselves. Sliding partition walls allow room sizes to be varied.
A rainwater harvesting system is sunk underneath the lawn Innovations The roof is fitted with Rheinzink Solar Thermie panels, a technology that can convert both sunlight and ambient heat to electrial energy |
